Friday May 24 Cattle on Feed, Cold Storage, + Chix & Eggs Reports

NEBRASKA CATTLE ON FEED DOWN 1%

Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.51 million cattle on feed on May 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down 1% from last year. Placements during April totaled 445,000 head, up 3% from 2023. Fed cattle marketings for the month of April totaled 465,000 head, up 13% from last year. Other disappearance during April totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.



IOWA CATTLE ON FEED UP 2%


Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 660,000 head on May 1, 2024, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Cattle on Feed report. This was unchanged from April but up 2 percent from May 1, 2023. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 550,000 head on feed, up 1 percent from last month but unchanged from last year. Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,210,000 head, up slightly from last month and up 1 percent from last year.

Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during April 2024 totaled 89,000 head, down 15 percent from March and down 2 percent from April 2023. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 67,000 head, up 24 percent from March and up 22 percent from April 2023. Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 156,000 head, down 2 percent from March but up 7 percent from April 2023.

Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during April 2024 totaled 87,000 head, down 6 percent from March but up 10 percent from April 2023. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 60,000 head, up 28 percent from March and up 40 percent from April 2023. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 147,000 head, up 5 percent from March and up 20 percent from April 2023. Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 4,000 head.



United States Cattle on Feed Down 1 Percent


Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on May 1, 2024. The inventory was 1 percent below May 1, 2023.

Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.66 million head, 6 percent below 2023. Net placements were 1.60 million head. During April, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 335,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 220,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 375,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 451,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 205,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 70,000 head.

Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 1.87 million head, 10 percent above 2023. Other disappearance totaled 56,000 head during April, 10 percent above 2023.

USDA Cold Storage April 2024 Highlights


Total red meat supplies in freezers were up 4 percent from the previous month but down 9 percent from last year. Total pounds of beef in freezers were down 1 percent from the previous month and down 5 percent from last year. Frozen pork supplies were up 8 percent from the previous month but down 12 percent from last year. Stocks of pork bellies were up 3 percent from last month but down 6 percent from last year.

Total frozen poultry supplies on April 30, 2024 were up 1 percent from the previous month but down 5 percent from a year ago. Total stocks of chicken were down 3 percent from the previous month and down 10 percent from last year. Total pounds of turkey in freezers were up 9 percent from last month and up 6 percent from April 30, 2023.

Total natural cheese stocks in refrigerated warehouses on April 30, 2024 were up slightly from the previous month but down 1 percent from April 30, 2023. Butter stocks were up 14 percent from last month and up 9 percent from a year ago.

Total frozen fruit stocks were down 6 percent from last month but up 9 percent from a year ago. Total frozen vegetable stocks were down 6 percent from last month and down 2 percent from a year ago.



NEBRASKA CHICKENS AND EGGS


Nebraska egg production during April totaled 203 million eggs, up from 181 million in 2023. April egg production per 100 layers was 2,414 eggs, compared to 2,426 eggs in 2023.  All layers in Nebraska during April 2024 totaled 8.40 million, up from 7.46 million the previous year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

IOWA:  Iowa egg production during April 2024 was 1.13 billion eggs, up 1 percent from the previous April, according to the latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The average number of all layers on hand during April 2024 was 44.8 million, down 1 percent from last year. Eggs per 100 layers for April was 2,529, up 3 percent from a year ago.

April Egg Production Down 1 Percent

United States egg production totaled 8.93 billion during April 2024, down 1 percent from last year. Production included 7.68 billion table eggs, and 1.26 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.16 billion were broiler-type and 97.5 million were egg-type. The average number of layers during April 2024 totaled 375 million, down 2 percent from last year. April egg production per 100 layers was 2,381 eggs, up 1 percent from April 2023.
                                    
Total layers in the United States on May 1, 2024 totaled 371 million, down 4 percent from last year. The 371 million layers consisted of 305 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 61.8 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.86 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on May 1, 2024, averaged 79.3 eggs per 100 layers, up 1 percent from May 1, 2023.
