NEBRASKA CATTLE ON FEED UP 1%
Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.48 million cattle on feed on June 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 1% from last year. Placements during May totaled 495,000 head, up 10% from 2023. Fed cattle marketings for the month of May totaled 510,000 head, down 2% from last year. Other disappearance during May totaled 15,000 head, down 5,000 head from last year.
IOWA CATTLE ON FEED UP 2%
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 660,000 head on June 1, 2024, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Cattle on Feed report. This was unchanged from May but up 2 percent from June 1, 2023. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 545,000 head on feed, down 1 percent from last month but up 1 percent from last year. Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,205,000 head, down slightly from last month but up 1 percent from last year.
Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during May 2024 totaled 73,000 head, down 18 percent from April and down 3 percent from May 2023. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 52,000 head, down 22 percent from April and down 13 percent from May 2023. Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 125,000 head, down 20 percent from April and down 7 percent from May 2023.
Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during May 2024 totaled 71,000 head, down 18 percent from April and down 3 percent from May 2023. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 56,000 head, down 7 percent from April and down 18 percent from May 2023. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 127,000 head, down 14 percent from April and down 10 percent from May 2023. Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 3,000 head.
United States Cattle on Feed Down Slightly
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on June 1, 2024. The inventory was slightly below June 1, 2023.

Placements in feedlots during May totaled 2.05 million head, 4 percent above 2023. Net placements were 1.98 million head. During May, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 395,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 315,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 485,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 531,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 230,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 90,000 head.

May Milk Production in the United States down 0.9 Percent
Milk production in the United States during May totaled 19.7 billion pounds, down 0.9 percent from May 2023. Production per cow in the United States averaged 2,105 pounds for May, 3 pounds below May 2023. The number of milk cows on farms in the United States was 9.35 million head, 68,000 head less than May 2023, but 5,000 head more than April 2024.
IOWA: Milk production in Iowa during May 2024 totaled 522 million pounds, up 2 percent from the previous May according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during May, at 243,000 head, was unchanged from last month but up 3,000 from May 2023. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,150 pounds, up 15 pounds from last May.
