NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION
For the week ending May 5, 2019, there were 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 4 short, 78 adequate, and 18 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 2 short, 84 adequate, and 14 surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Corn planted was 35 percent, near 38 last year, and behind 47 for the five-year average. Emerged was 2 percent, equal to last year, and behind 9 average.
Soybeans planted was 14 percent, near 15 last year and 13 average.
Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 25 fair, 64 good, and 7 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 1 percent, near 2 average.
Sorghum planted was 2 percent, near 3 last year and 6 average.
Oats planted was 74 percent, near 77 last year, and behind 90 average. Emerged was 35 percent, behind 42 last year, and well behind 69 average.
Pasture and Range Report:
Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 16 fair, 73 good, and 7 excellent.
IOWA CROP PROGRESS & CONDITION
Rain across the State delayed planting activities and held Iowa farmers to 2.8 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 5, 2019, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Below normal temperatures also slowed crop emergence.
Topsoil moisture levels rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 69 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 66 percent adequate and 32 percent surplus.
Statewide, just 15 percent of the corn crop was planted during the past week. Iowa growers have now planted 36 percent of the expected crop, 1 day behind last year and 5 days behind the 5-year average. Northwest and northeast Iowa farmers have less than 20 percent of their corn planted. Just 1 percent of the crop has emerged, almost a week behind average.
Eight percent of the expected soybean crop has been planted, 2 days behind last year and average.
Eighty-seven percent of the expected oat crop has been planted, 6 days ahead of last year but equal to average. Thirty-five percent of the crop has emerged, 2 days ahead of last year but a week behind average.
Pastures have had plenty of moisture, but could use warmer temperatures as growth remains slow. Pasture condition rated 61 percent good to excellent. Even with the slow pasture growth, cattle have been turned out into pastures.
USDA: Planting Slips Further Behind Average Pace
U.S. corn, soybean and spring wheat planting fell further behind their average paces last week as wet, cool conditions persisted in parts of the Midwest and Upper Midwest, according to USDA NASS' weekly Crop Progress report on Monday.
As of Sunday, an estimated 23% of the nation's corn was planted, behind 36% at the same time last year and 23 percentage points behind the five-year average of 46%. That was further behind normal than the previous week when corn planting was 12 percentage points behind average. Corn emerged was estimated at 6%, near 7% last year but 6 percentage points behind the five-year average of 13%.
Soybean planting progress also slipped further behind the average pace. As of Sunday, an estimated 6% of the crop was planted, down from last year's 14% and 8 percentage points behind the five-year average of 14%. In last week's report, soybean planting was 3 percentage points behind average.
Spring wheat planting, too, continued to fall further behind the five-year average. NASS estimated that 22% of spring wheat was planted as of Sunday, 27 percentage points behind the five-year average of 49%. In last Monday's report, planting was 20 percentage points behind average.
Winter wheat was 29% headed as of Sunday, near last year's 31% but down 12 percentage points from the five-year average of 41%. Winter wheat condition held steady last week at 64% good to excellent.
Sorghum was 22% planted, compared to 29% last year and a five-year average of 29%. Cotton planting was 18% complete, compared to 19% last year and an average of 19%.
Rice was 48% planted, compared to 66% last year and an average of 69%. Thirty-five percent of rice was emerged, compared to 42% last year and an average of 50%.
Oats were 50% planted as of May 5, compared to 54% last year and an average of 72%. Oats emerged were at 36%, compared to 33% last year and an average of 51%.
