Friday July 19 Cattle on Feed Report

 NEBRASKA CATTLE ON FEED UP 3%

Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.39 million cattle on feed on July 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 3% from last year. Placements during June totaled 415,000 head, down 2% from 2023. Fed cattle marketings for the month of June totaled 495,000 head, down 6% from last year. Other disappearance during June totaled 10,000 head, down 10,000 head from last year.



IOWA CATTLE ON FEED UNCHANGED


Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 650,000 head on July 1, 2024, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Cattle on Feed report. This was down 2 percent from June but unchanged from July 1, 2023. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 515,000 head on feed, down 6 percent from last month and down 3 percent from last year. Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,165,000 head, down 3 percent from last month and down 1 percent from last year.

Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during June 2024 totaled 47,000 head, down 36 percent from May and down 22 percent from June 2023. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 35,000 head, down 33 percent from May and down 19 percent from June 2023. Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 82,000 head, down 34 percent from May and down 20 percent from June 2023.

Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during June 2024 totaled 56,000 head, down 21 percent from May and down 3 percent from June 2023. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 63,000 head, up 13 percent from May and up 24 percent from June 2023. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 119,000 head, down 6 percent from May but up 9 percent from June 2023. Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 3,000 head.



United States Cattle on Feed Up 1 Percent

    
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.3 million head on July 1, 2024. The inventory was 1 percent above July 1, 2023. The inventory included 6.82 million steers and steer calves, up 1 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 60 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.48 million head, up slightly from 2023.

Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.56 million head, 7 percent below 2023. Net placements were 1.51 million head. During June, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 365,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 255,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 350,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 349,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 165,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 80,000 head.

Marketings of fed cattle during June totaled 1.79 million head, 9 percent below 2023. Marketings were the second lowest for June since the series began in 1996. Other disappearance totaled 57,000 head during June, 17 percent below 2023.
