November 13 Crop Condition Report

Nebraska Winter Wheat Condition Up Slightly This Week

Agricultural  Summary:

For  the  week  ending  November 11, 2012, light precipitation fell in the form of rain across the eastern third of the State and as snow in Panhandle areas.   However, moisture accumulations were often less than .25  inch with many  southwestern  and  south  central  counties largely  missed,  according  to  USDA’s  National  Agricultural Statistics  Service,  Nebraska  Field  Office.    Statewide,  corn harvest was near completion. Remaining acres were in western counties where producers continued to deal with the effects of high winds which downed  corn nearly  a month  ago.   Winter wheat  conditions  showed  some  improvement  but  emergence continued behind average due  to short soil moisture supplies.  Soil temperatures averaged in the upper 40’s except for a few southwestern counties where soil temperatures were in the low 50’s.

Weather  Summary:

Average  temperatures  varied  widely across the state from 5 degrees above normal in the Southeast to  3  degrees  below  normal  in  north  central  counties.  Highs ranged from  the upper 70’s in the southern half of the state to lows near zero in the Panhandle.

Field Crops Report:

Winter wheat emerged was 91 percent, behind  100  percent  last  year  and  99  average.   Wheat conditions  rated  14  percent  very  poor,  28  poor,  43  fair,  14  good,  and  1  excellent,  well  below  77  percent  good  to excellent last year and 68 average.

Sorghum harvested was 99 percent complete, ahead of 90 last year and 73 average.

Iowa Farmers Look Ahead to 2013

Although  the  State  received  precipitation  during  the  week,  moistures levels  are  a  concern  across  much  of  Iowa  as  farmers  contemplate starting  the  2013  crop  season  with  low  moisture  levels  according  to USDA’s  National  Agricultural  Statistics  Service,  Iowa  Field  Office. With  most  farmers  having  completed  field  work,  the  week’s  most common  field  activities  were  application  of  anhydrous,  tiling,  and repairing waterways.

There  were  5.4  days  suitable  for  fieldwork  statewide  during  the  past week.  Topsoil  moisture  levels  improved  to  23 percent  very  short, 36 percent  short,  39 percent  adequate,  and  2 percent  surplus.  Subsoil moisture  is  rated  at  61 percent  very  short,  31 percent  short,  8 percent adequate,  and  0 percent  surplus.  Grain  movement  continues  to  slow, with  just  19 percent  of  the  State  seeing  moderate  to  heavy  grain movement  from  farm  to  elevator.  Ninety-nine percent  of  the  State reports adequate or surplus off-farm storage capacity and 97 percent of the State reports adequate or surplus on-farm storage capacity.

Ninety-nine percent  of  the  corn  crop  has  been  harvested  for  grain  or seed,  three weeks  ahead  of  normal. Ninety-nine percent  of  the State’s soybean  crop  has  been  harvested.  South Central  Iowa  lags  behind  all other districts for crop harvest with 94 percent and 96 percent complete for corn and soybeans, respectively.

Hay  supplies  are  still  considered  short  across 45 percent of  Iowa with 37 percent  of  the  hay  supply  considered  in  good  condition. Livestock conditions  are  normal  as  cattle  adjust  to  recent  temperature  swings. Farmers are continuing to graze cattle on fields of corn stalks.
