NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION
For the week ending September 16, 2018, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 14 short, 80 adequate, and 3 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 14 short, 82 adequate, and 3 surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 4 poor, 12 fair, 50 good, and 32 excellent. Corn dented was 92 percent, near 93 last year and 91 for the five-year average. Mature was 44 percent, ahead of 34 last year and 33 average. Harvested was 4 percent, near 2 both last year and average.
Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 11 fair, 55 good, and 29 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 64 percent, ahead of 50 last year, and well ahead of 44 average. Harvested was 3 percent, equal to last year, and near 1 average.
Winter wheat planted was 22 percent, near 21 last year, but behind 30 average.
Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 14 fair, 58 good, and 26 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 91 percent, near 90 last year, and equal to average. Mature was 28 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 21 average.
Pasture and Range Report:
Pasture and range conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 3 poor, 16 fair, 63 good, and 16 excellent.
IOWA CROP PROGRESS & CONDITION REPORT
Warm, dry weather gave Iowa farmers 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 16, 2018, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Activities for the week included harvesting hay, harvesting seed corn, chopping corn silage, harvesting corn for grain, harvesting soybeans and seeding cover crops.
Topsoil moisture levels rated 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 84 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 3 percent very short, 7 percent short, 77 percent adequate and 13 percent surplus. South central Iowa topsoil moisture supplies rated 75 percent adequate to surplus for the second consecutive week.
Ninety-four percent of the corn crop has reached the dent stage or beyond, a week ahead of the 5-year average. Fifty-three percent of the corn crop was mature, just over a week ahead of average. Corn condition rated 73 percent good to excellent.
Eighty-three percent of the soybean crop was coloring with 50 percent dropping leaves, 8 days ahead of average. Soybean condition rated 72 percent good to excellent.
The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 94 percent complete, a week behind the previous year. Pasture conditions rated 50 percent good to excellent. Warm and dry conditions helped dry out feedlots.
First National Soy Harvest Report of Season Shows Progress Ahead of Normal
In its first soybean harvest report of the season, USDA's National Ag Statistics Service estimated that 6% of the U.S. crop was harvested as of Sunday, Sept. 16, 3 percentage points ahead of the five-year average, according to the agency's weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.
This year's soybean harvest progress is also 2 percentage points ahead of 4% at the same time last year. Nationwide, the crop continued to mature ahead of normal with 53% of soybeans estimated to be dropping leaves, 17 percentage points ahead of the average pace of 36%. The crop's good-to-excellent rating dropped to 67% last week, down 1 percentage point from 68% the previous week.
The U.S. corn harvest also continued at an ahead-of-normal pace with an estimated 9% of the crop harvested as of Sunday, 2 percentage points ahead of last year and 3 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. The crop continued to mature ahead of normal with 54% of corn estimated as mature as of Sunday, 18 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 36%.
Corn condition, at 68% good to excellent, was unchanged from the previous week.
Meanwhile, winter wheat planting progress was estimated at 13% as of Sunday, near last year's pace of 12% and also near the five-year average of 14%.
Spring wheat harvest had nearly wrapped up with 97% of the crop harvested as of Sunday, near last year's 98% but ahead of the five-year average of 92%.
Sorghum coloring was 88%, ahead of the five-year average of 83%. Sorghum mature was estimated at 41%, near 42% at the same time last year but behind the five-year average of 44%. Twenty-six percent of the sorghum crop was harvested as of Sunday, behind the average pace of 29%.
