NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION
For the week ending September 2, 2018, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 13 short, 79 adequate, and 7 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 15 short, 80 adequate, and 4 surplus.
Field Crops Report:
Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 13 fair, 52 good, and 29 excellent. Corn dough was 97 percent, equal to last year, and near 95 for the five-year average. Dented was 72 percent, ahead of 66 last year and 64 average. Mature was 9 percent, equal to last year, and near 7 average.
Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 13 fair, 56 good, and 25 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 15 percent, ahead of 7 last year and 10 average.
Winter wheat planted was 1 percent, equal to last year, and near 2 average.
Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 15 fair, 56 good, and 28 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 75 percent, ahead of 61 last year and 63 average. Mature was 7 percent, near 5 last year and 3 average.
Pasture and Range Report:
Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 17 fair, 65 good, and 12 excellent.
IOWA CROP PROGRESS & CONDITION REPORT
Widespread rainfall meant Iowa farmers had just 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 2, 2018, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Activities for the week included cutting hay, chopping corn silage, and moving grain.
Topsoil moisture levels rated 4 percent very short, 6 percent short, 69 percent adequate and 21 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 6 percent very short, 9 percent short, 71 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus. Much of southern Iowa received multiple inches of rain over the past week, easing moisture concerns in some areas although levels are still mostly short to very short.
Ninety-five percent of the corn crop has reached the dough stage or beyond with 77 percent dented or beyond, over a week ahead of both last year and the 5-year average. Fifteen percent of the corn crop was mature, 8 days ahead of average. There were a few reports of corn harvested for grain. Corn condition rated 74 percent good to excellent.
Almost one-third of the soybean crop was coloring with 4 percent dropping leaves. Soybean condition rated 72 percent good to excellent.
The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 79 percent complete, now over a week behind the previous year as weather conditions allowed for little progress in cutting hay.
Pasture conditions improved to 47 percent good to excellent.
USDA: Crops Continue to Mature Ahead of Average
U.S. corn and soybean conditions held mostly steady last week as both crops continued to mature ahead of their normal pace, according to the USDA National Ag Statistics Service's weekly Crop Progress report released Tuesday. The report is normally released on Mondays but was delayed this week due to the Labor Day holiday.
Nationwide, corn condition dropped just 1 percentage point from 68% good to excellent the previous week to 67% last week, close to what the crop's good-to-excellent rating was at the same time in 2015, according to NASS.
NASS estimated that 96% of corn was in the dough stage as of Sunday, Sept. 2, 5 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 91%. Seventy-five percent of corn was dented, 15 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 60%. Corn mature nationwide was estimated at 22%, 11 percentage points ahead of the average pace of 11%.
Meanwhile, 16% of soybeans nationwide were dropping leaves, 7 percentage points ahead of the average of 9%. Soybean condition was unchanged at 66% good to excellent.
Spring wheat harvest was 87% complete as of Sunday, equal to last year but ahead of the five-year average of 75%. Harvest was nearly finished in both South Dakota and Minnesota.
Sorghum was 96% headed as of Sunday, near the five-year average of 95%. Sorghum coloring was 69%, ahead of the five-year average of 62%. Sorghum mature was estimated at 30%, near 31% at the same time last year but behind the five-year average of 33%. Twenty-two percent of the sorghum crop was harvested as of Sunday, near the average pace of 23%.
Barley was 84% harvested as of Sunday, behind 91% last year but near the average of 83%. Oats were 94% harvested as of Sunday, ahead of 90% last year and also ahead of the five-year average of 91%.
Thirty-one percent of rice was harvested as of Sunday, ahead of last year's 28% and also ahead of the five-year average of 26%. Cotton was 96% setting bolls, equal to both last year and the average pace. Twenty-nine percent of cotton had bolls opening, ahead of the average of 26%.
