September 9 Crop Progress and Condition Reports

NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

For the week ending September 8, 2013, temperatures, for the third week in a row, were well above normal.  This again combined with  limited  rainfall  to draw down soil moisture reserves and stress dryland crops and pasture, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.  Limited rainfall did occur over areas of central and Panhandle counties, but most growing areas remained dry with non-irrigated fields quickly maturing.  The first fields of seed corn  were  being  harvested  and  cutting  of  dryland  silage  was  underway.   Dry  bean  harvest  started  in  western  counties.  Statewide,  producers  had  6.8  days  suitable  for  fieldwork.  Topsoil moisture  supplies  rated  25  percent  very  short,  44  short,  31 adequate, and 0 surplus.   Subsoil moisture supplies rated 32 percent very short, 43 short, 25 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Field Crops Report:

All corn condition rated 7 percent very poor, 8 poor, 23 fair, 43 good, and 19 excellent.  Irrigated corn conditions  rated  81 percent good or  excellent,  compared  to 75  average.   Dryland  corn  conditions  rated 35  percent  good or excellent, compared to 59 average.  Corn in dough was 98 percent, behind 100 last year but equal to 98 average.  Corn dented was 72 percent, behind 97 last year and 82 average.  Corn mature was 5 percent, behind 52 last year and 17 average.

Soybean  conditions  rated 4 percent very poor,  8  poor, 27  fair, 48 good,  and 13  excellent.  Soybeans dropping  leaves were  16 percent, behind 22 last year but ahead of 9 average.

Sorghum  conditions  rated  16  percent  very  poor,  18  poor,  25  fair,  38  good,  and  3  excellent.    Sorghum  turning  color was  65 percent, ahead of 48 last year and 59 average.

Winter wheat was 6 percent planted, near 7 last year but behind 13 average.

Alfalfa  conditions were  5  percent  very  poor,  13  poor,  33  fair,  43  good,  and  6  excellent.   The  third  cutting  of  alfalfa was  95 percent complete, behind 100 last year but near 93 average.  The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 13 percent complete, behind 70 last year and 31 average.

Livestock, Pasture and Range Report:

Stock water supplies rated 7 percent very short, 22 short, 71 adequate, and 0 surplus.  Pasture and range condition was 18 percent very poor, 21 poor, 31 fair, 29 good, and 1 excellent.

Iowa Crop Progress & Condition

Iowa experienced warmer and drier than normal weather during the week ending September 8, 2013, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service.  Some rain fell in the western part of the State, but most areas continued to be dry.  Hot temperatures pushed crops to mature, but crop conditions are showing stress from the heat and lack of precipitation.  Statewide there were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork.

Topsoil moisture levels rated 52 percent very short, 33 percent short,  15 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus.  Subsoil moisture levels rated 41 percent very short, 40 percent short, 19 percent adequate and   0 percent surplus.  Topsoil moisture was considered very short on over 50 percent of the acreage in the southern two-thirds of Iowa.

With nearly all the corn crop in or past the milk stage, 86 percent of the crop reached the dough stage, trailing the normal 93 percent.  Fifty-four percent of the crop has reached the dent stage, 24 percentage points behind normal.  Only 5 percent of corn was mature, just over two weeks behind normal.  Corn condition declined slightly and rated 9 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 31 percent good and 4 percent excellent.

With almost the entire soybean crop setting pods, 12 percent has begun turning color.  Some of the earliest planted soybeans have begun to drop leaves.  Soybean condition also declined and was rated 10 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 30 percent good and 3 percent excellent.

The harvest of third cutting alfalfa was 84 percent complete, slightly ahead of the normal 82 percent, but still behind last year’s 100 percent.  Pasture condition continued to deteriorate, and was rated 30 percent very poor, 32 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 8 percent good and 1 percent excellent.

IOWA PRELIMINARY WEATHER SUMMARY

Provided by Harry Hillaker, State Climatologist, Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship

Iowa recorded another warm and dry week.  Temperatures managed to fall below normal on Monday (2nd) and Tuesday (3rd) but were well above normal in most areas the rest of the week.  Cresco and Williamsburg reported the lowest temperatures of the week with Tuesday morning lows of 41 degrees.  Saturday (6th) was the hottest day with highs reaching 100 degrees at Lamoni, Knoxville and Osceola although cloud cover held highs to the mid 80’s over parts of northwest and northeast Iowa.  Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged   4.3 degrees above normal.  The only rain of consequence came on Wednesday night into Thursday morning over the western one-third of the state.  Little Sioux in Harrison County reported the most rain with 1.25 inches.  However, rain of more than one-half inch was confined to parts of Woodbury, Monona and Harrison counties.  Otherwise there were some isolated light showers over far southern Iowa on Sunday (1st) morning and scattered brief light showers across the state on Friday and Saturday.  Much of the eastern two-thirds of Iowa received no measurable rain during the week.  The statewide average precipitation was only 0.04 inch while normal for the week is 0.84 inches.  A drier week has not been recorded since mid January.

Hot, Dry Weather Shows in Crop Progress, Condition Ratings

A week of hot, dry days for a large part of the Corn Belt sped corn progress to the dent stage, but did not seem to have as great an impact on the percentage of the crop deemed mature, according to USDA's weekly Crop Progress report.

Sixty-four percent of the nation's corn crop was in the dent stage as of Sept. 8, USDA reported, compared to 42% last week and a five-year average of 75%. Only 9% of the crop was tagged as mature, compared to 4% last week and a five-year average of 28%. Corn condition suffered during the week with 54% of the crop rated good-to-excellent, compared to 56% last week.

Ninety-seven percent of U.S. soybeans were setting pods, compared to 92% last week and a five-year average of 98%. Eleven percent of the soybeans were dropping leaves compared to a five-year average of 19%. Soybean condition also worsened, with 16% of the crop now rated poor to very poor compared to 14% last week.

Five percent of the nation's winter wheat was planted in the last week, equal to the five-year average.
